Apple Ring to Shake Up Wearable Tech Market: iRing in the Making?!

"Be best, not first..."

Apple is rumoured to be working on its very own smart ring, ready to take on Samsung's Galaxy Ring and the well-known wearable tech device - Oura Ring. The competition is heating up, and here is a quick inside scoop for you.

What do the rumours say?

According to a report by Electronic Times, Apple has been keeping a close eye on the market, assessing the demand for a smart ring as a more discreet alternative to a watch. Additionally, the company has been applying for patents for a finger-worn device with NFC technology, suggesting its push to align with the timing of its release.

Main competitor: Samsung Galaxy Ring

Samsung has teased the upcoming release of their smart ring but has yet to reveal the official launch date. A grand unveiling is expected at the upcoming "Unpacked" event, possibly taking place sometime later in July alongside the highly anticipated Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 phones.

The launch of Samsung's Galaxy Ring might have pushed Apple to prioritise its smart ring project, adding fuel to the rumour mill.

Features the Apple Ring could (potentially) have:

  • Health tracking: ECG, blood oxygen monitoring, sleep tracking, and more.
  • Smart assistant integration: Interact with Siri seamlessly, make calls, and send texts.
  • AR/VR control: Navigate virtual worlds and interact with augmented reality experiences with finger gestures.
  • HomeKit integration: Control smart home devices with a tap.
  • Sleek and stylish design: Apple is known for its premium aesthetics, and the Ring will likely follow suit.

My opinion: A game changer or a gimmick?

The promise of an Apple Ring is undeniable. It has the potential to transform how we engage with technology, providing smooth interaction between our devices and ourselves.

The shift in growing interest in wearable devices is not surprising, given the rising digitalisation and the desire from consumers for a quick and convenient method to track their health.

The trend started with Oura Ring, a Finnish startup, becoming the new symbol of wellness. In fact, Prince Harry notably sported the Oura Ring during his Australian tour in 2018. The Oura Ring even made a memorable appearance on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' with Jennifer Aniston sharing her enthusiasm, saying, “I'm obsessed with the Oura Ring, looking at my sleep patterns and how poorly I sleep, it shames me every day.”

Only time will tell if the Apple Ring will become a reality, but one thing's for sure: the Apple community, according to Reddit, is eagerly waiting to buy a smart ring and “start wearing all their normal watches again”.
